Meet SPACES members face to face

Technical Meeting – Tuesday 7th December 2021

There will be a joint Technical Meeting with CIBSE HCNE at the Counting House, London on Tuesday 7th December, followed by a Christmas Buffet.

The  presenter will be Dr Hywel Davies, Technical Manager at CIBSE. The presentation  will be covering

Building Regulation Part L,
Building Safety Bill, and
the Golden Thread

As this is the Christmas meeting, the meeting will be followed by a Christmas Buffet.  NB Due to pre-ordering Christmas Buffet is only available to order up to Friday 19th November 2021

Attendance at the meeting is free for SPACES members and CIBSE HCNE members, and £35+VAT for non-members (£5+VAT if not attending the buffet).

Schedule of accommodation tools for schools and colleges 

There has been an update to the Schedule of accommodation tools for schools and colleges.The main change is ‘a schedule of accommodation tool for FE colleges has been added.

The guidance is used by the DfE to identify the likely type and number of spaces in school and college projects. It can also be used to help with other education building projects. The guidance is also for school and college providers, local authorities, dioceses, and building professionals.

Employer’s requirements for school projects Part A and Part B (Output Specs) 

The Department for Education has updated the Employer’s requirements for school projects Part A and Part B (Output Specs).

The Employer’s Requirements documents consist of:
Part A: General Conditions
Part B: Generic Design Brief
Part C School-specific Brief

These documents form the Employer’s Requirements for the DfE Construction Framework 2021 and the Offsite Schools Framework (incorporating Modular and MMC delivery)(MMC)).

Part B and Part C form the Output Specification for school projects.

For use by contractors, technical professionals, schools, academies, providers, local authorities and dioceses

On the 23rd November the Cabinet Office launched the Net Zero Estate Playbook. It sets out key policies and guidance for property teams to help in the transition of public buildings and estates to Net Zero.

In the run up to COP26, the LGA are showcasing best practice from councils across England and Wales through their Pass the Planet campaign.

Net Zero Strategy: Build Back Greener

BEIS have launched their policies and proposals for decarbonising all sectors of the UK economy to meet net zero target by 2050.

Plan to drive down the cost of clean heat 

BEIS have launched plans to incentivise people to install low-carbon heating systems in a simple, fair and cheap way as they replace their old boilers over the coming decade.

Future Homes: Electrical Safety in the Net Zero Home

Electrical Safety First have launched their report on what they believe are the challenges  and identified the key actors who have a role to play in ensuring electrical safety during the transition to net zero, and offers recommendations that will help to keep consumers safe from electrical risks.

UK Architects Declare: Practice Guide 2021 

UK Architects Declare has published its Practice Guide, which we’ve developed to help signatory architectural practices convert their declaration of a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency into meaningful action and build momentum within their practice. Co-written by members of the AD Steering Group and many volunteers and reviewed by leading industry experts, it features over 60 exemplar projects from a range of practices in the UK and abroad.
