Addressing Climate Change across education settings

Gemma Taylor MCIBSE IEng (BEng Hons), Energy, Environment, Engineering and Carbon Lead in the Design Team, DfE will be presenting on Addressing Climate Change Across Education Settings on Wednesday 26th January 2022.
 
Synopsis: The DfE have recently launched the latest iteration of the Output Specification (S21) which embeds net zero carbon in operation and climate resilience across the full suite of documents, as well as through the introduction of Technical Annex 2J: Sustainability. The DfE Design Team Energy Carbon and Performance lead who lead on the incorporation of these standards, will be taking us through the key changes, referencing the journey which the DfE have taken to arrive at these standards, as well as providing brief updates on ongoing projects and initiatives as the team work towards the next Spending Review.

Bio: Gemma is an energy, engineering, carbon, and performance lead within the DfE design team. Having joined the DfE from private practice in 2020 she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in both the architectural and engineering design field. Gemma currently leads on the development of climate resilience policy, technical standards development, pilots, research projects and spending review bids. Outside of working hours, Gemma also volunteers her time to contribute to her chartered institute and our SPACES community. She won the SPACES Young Visionary Award in 2018, is the current Vice Chair of the CIBSE School design group, and hold the CIBSE YEN Global Vice Chair position.

Study Day 2022 – Thursday 23rd June 2022

Following last year’s Virtual Conference this year we are planning on returning to a Study Day, being held on Thursday 23rd June 2022 at De Montfort University. 

The theme will continue with Zero Carbon and the Climate Emergency but will be focussed on the practicalities on how we are going to achieve zero carbon.

New Approved Documents 

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities have updated on the Building Regulations Approved Documents.

  • Part F – Ventilation
  • Part L – Conservation of Fuel and Power
  • Part O – Overheating (new)
  • Part S – Infrastructure for charging electric vehicles (new)

Consultation Response Parts F & L 

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has published a summary and its response to the consultation on The Future Buildings Standard: 2021 – changes to Part L (conservation of fuel and power) and Part F (ventilation) of the Building Regulations for non-domestic buildings and dwellings; and overheating in new residential buildings.

Schedule of accommodation tools for schools and colleges 

There has been an update to the Schedule of accommodation tools for schools and colleges. The main change is ‘a schedule of accommodation tool for FE colleges has been added.

The guidance is used by the DfE to identify the likely type and number of spaces in school and college projects. It can also be used to help with other education building projects. The guidance is also for school and college providers, local authorities, dioceses, and building professionals.

Employer’s requirements for school projects Part A and Part B (Output Specs) 

The Department for Education has updated the Employer’s requirements for school projects Part A and Part B (Output Specs).

The Employer’s Requirements documents consist of:

  • Part A: General Conditions
  • Part B: Generic Design Brief
  • Part C School-specific Brief

These documents form the Employer’s Requirements for the DfE Construction Framework 2021 and the Offsite Schools Framework (incorporating Modular and MMC delivery)(MMC)).

Part B and Part C form the Output Specification for school projects.

For use by contractors, technical professionals, schools, academies, providers, local authorities and dioceses
