SPACES are delighted to return to De Montfort University on Thursday 23rd June 2022 for our national Study Day.

This year’s theme is Net Zero Carbon – Building Resilience. It is the biggest challenge we’ve ever faced, and if ever there was a time to pull together, share knowledge, experiences and network it must be now. As always, we will be offering a variety of sessions looking at what others are doing on their Net Zero Carbon (NZC) journey.

Our Keynote is Lord Rupert Redesdale, Member of the House of Lords, and the CEO of the Energy Managers Association (EMA), Carbon Management Association (CMA) and Low Energy Company (LEC).

Also on the main stage Patrick Brown, Head of Sustainable Construction Delivery, Edinburgh City Council will be presenting on Edinburgh City’s continuing journey to Zero Carbon. And in the afternoon an interactive roundtable discussion, facilitated by Alex Gee, Norse Group. 

As normal we will have a wide range of presentations, workshops and case studies including:

  • Building and living in a passivhaus – John Thornberry, Pick Everard
  • Creating a low carbon skills economy – Marina Robertson, Norse Group
  • Decarbonisation, net zero and funding sources – David Gilbey or Mark Postill, Faithful+Gould

The Implications of Net Zero for School Design

Beata Blachut and Jonathon Hunter-Hill, SAV Systems  will be discussing the steps required to drive schools towards Net Zero. It focuses on achieving energy savings and improving energy efficiency before moving on to integration of low carbon heat plant and ongoing monitoring. Specific topics covered include reducing heat loss, MVHR, reducing flow temperatures and increased delta Ts, automatic hydronic balancing, thermal storage, hybrid plant rooms (heat pumps, CHP, and boilers), delivery of DHW using HIUs, and monitoring to achieve Net Zero.

Beata Blachut: Head of Strategic Business Development – Technical, is an enthusiastic energy specialist with in-depth practical knowledge in the field of renewable energy, low carbon technologies, heat networks and climate change. A wide range of expertise centred upon the design and operation of heat networks (with focus on energy centres with CHPs, heat pumps and electric boilers; variable volume systems, HIUs, metering and monitoring). Active member of industry associations and advice groups with insight into energy policy. Contributor to CIBSE Heat Networks Design Guide. Frequently participating in conferences and trade fairs in Denmark, Germany, and Italy. Working within the UK Building Services sector for last 15 years.  
 
Jonathon Hunter Hill: Sector Manager – Education is a passionate advocate for MVHR, Jonathon is the Product Manager for AirMaster decentralized MVHR and Energi Raven, with a wider emphasis on improving energy efficiency in schools to meet our Net Zero goals. Jonathon has worked with many local authorities over the years. With an existing relationship to The City of Edinburgh Council, in April 2021, he secured Passivhaus Component Certification for one of AirMaster’s MVHR units. Following university, Jonathon joined SAV Systems and has worked there for the past 9 years.

Meet SPACES Colleagues Face to Face – Technical Meeting

Tuesday 7th December 2021

There will be a joint Technical Meeting with CIBSE HCNE at the Counting House, London on Tuesday 7th December, followed by a Christmas Buffet.

The  presenter will Hywel Davies, Technical Manager at CIBSE, and although the presentation is still tbc, it will be covering

Building Regulation Part L,
Building Safety Bill, and
the Golden Thread

As this is the Christmas meeting, the meeting will be followed by a Christmas Buffet.  NB Due to pre-ordering Christmas Buffet is only available to order up to Friday 19th November 2021

Attendance at the meeting is free for SPACES members and CIBSE HCNE members, and £35+VAT for non-members (£5+VAT if not attending the buffet).

Heat Pump Systems

CIBSE HCNE are running an online webinar on  Heat Pump Systems – An update on UK Regulations post Brexit.

The UK has signalled that it will be a zero carbon country by 2050 and is focused on building safety and efficiency as the key areas that need to be addressed urgently. What can we expect to change?

This presentation gives an overview on the timeline for Building Regulations, Future Homes Standard, and the Building Safety Bill.. Graham Wright – Legislation & Compliance Manager at Daikin will discuss what can we expect to change.
