Those whose membership has expired will get an email explaining how they can reinstate their membership. All members will be able to indicate their preferences regarding events that they would like to know about – ie by region hub or by discipline. As we move across to the new system emails will be automated and sent by mail chimp, though there will still be a monthly update consolidating everything that has been circulated.

Members enquiries

School Condition Surveys

David Dangerfield, Somerset County Council asks

I am interested to know from other members if their organisations operate a directly employed property maintenance delivery team  comprising of gas engineers, electricians, carpenters etc  who are engaged to carry out the physical repairs and maintenance tasks.

I know that some District and Borough Council with housing stock have directly employed teams but I’m not aware of any local authorities who operate purely corporate / education buildings who have a retained direct labour resource for R&M services.

At Somerset CC, we have undertaken an initiative to insource elements of  the R&M delivery service. We have nearly completed our first year of operation and the savings are quite remarkable ( 30% ) when compared to the comparable services provided under the previous outsourced model. We have also seen a range of non cashable benefits such as improved recycling, greater flexibility in service delivery and expanding  our services into new areas….all positive news which I thought I’d share.

Just wondered the scale of “insourcing” R&M services amongst other LA’s please.

If you have any thoughts please email David Dangerfield.

Thank you to all those that respond to enquiries.

New ways of working

Are you or do you know some-one who could be involved more with running SPACES? We are reviewing the way we run the society, organise events and keep in touch with members and need support from a wider range of people.

If you have any skills in the following areas and would be willing to contribute then please get in touch:

  • Events management
  • Web-site updating
  • Financial planning (overview)
  • Financial management (day to day)
  • Communication and networking with members

It could just be a few hours a week or month and some roles could offer remuneration.

If you are interested then please e-mail Andrew Rowe, President or Telephone 01473 316 590,
